Hip Dysplasia In Dogs; What Is It?

What is hip dysplasia in dogs?

Hip dysplasia in dogs is an abnormal formation of the hip socket. Severe hip dysplasia can eventually cause lameness and arthritis of the joints. When a puppy is growing the head of the femur (thighbone) and the socket of the pelvis must grow at the same pace. If this does not happen hip dysplasia in your dog occurs.

The joint becomes weak which causes degenerative joint disease also called osteoarthritis. This occurs when the cartilage deteriorates. There are wheelchairs for dogs with hip dysplasia which helps to stabilize your dog, relieve some of the pressure off of the hips and help them to stay active.

Which dogs are prone to hip dysplasia?

Both large and small breeds can be affected but are more common in larger breeds like Bulldogs, Mastiffs, St. Bernards, American Staffordshire, Retrievers and Rottweilers. Small breeds such as Pugs and French Bulldogs can also be affected. There are small dog wheelchairs and large dog wheelchairs that fit all breeds of dogs.

Besides a dog wheelchair other things can be done to help alleviate the symptoms. These include maintaining a healthy weight, moderate exercise to strengthen the muscles around the joints, proper nutrition and over the counter supplements such as glucosamine and CBD can help. Sometimes prescription pain pills may be needed, but you should consult your veterinarian.
